Robert Venturi Chippendale Side Chairs for Knoll International, 1986Automaton Vintage Furnishings
Postmodern architect Robert Venturi produced nine variants of these side chairs for Knoll in 1985 to suggest a specific historical furniture style. In this chair the Silhouette of the back is an adaptation of the designs of the 18th century English furniture designer Thomas Chippendale. These pieces were shaped to conform to modern standards of the International Style dictum of elegance, comfort and function. In the same year this model was introduced to the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of their collection.
Composed of bent plywood with black plastic laminate finish with detailed back reminiscent of the Chippendale style, original red woven fabric seat cushions and footpads. Each chair bares a Knoll International label on the underside of seat.
As these seminal chairs were not mass produced, they are now a collector's item, and would make a unique addition to any space and an Apt conversation starter. Interior design concepts these could be a part of are; chinoiserie, Monochromatic, Rocco, Postmodern, Neoclassical, Contemporary and Hollywood Regency.
