Expertly fabricated hand-hammered brass tray by German craftsman Georg Von Mendelssohn with mahogany stand, which was later added and affixed to the tray to create an attractive catch-all or side /end table. Mendelssohn's work opposed the declining popularity of the Art Nouveau style, embracing a simpler, more sparsely decorated form of a more "primitive style" which became hugely successful and highly coveted. Mendelssohn was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund.

This tray has been stamped, dated and numbered, indicating the limited edition of this piece, by the manufacturer. This tray features a low profile octagon shape with raised lip. The rim of this octagonal piece has been embellished by hand with a geometric pattern comprised of neat rows and shapes, while the body of the tray has been hammered to create a more roughly formed, unconstrained appearance, devising a beautiful contrast. There are some visible spots of oxidation which produces an attractive patina and some watermarks to the surface of tray. On the underside of the tray is the artists impressed manufacturer's mark Mendelssohn 1919 Nr 107.

This eye-catching vide poche or occasional table would be a great addition as part of a classic or contemporary entryway, hall, living room, den, family room, office or bedroom. It would also be an apt choice in a corporate, retail or hospitality location such as a boutique hotel lobby, cocktail bar, members club, workspace studio, executive office or in a luxe clothing emporium.

The majority of Mendelssohn's artisan pieces were destroyed or lost in the war. Some of his remaining works are privately owned and others belong to the collection at the Museum of Applied Arts at Schloss Pillnitz in Dresden.
