English Victorian Carved Rosewood Slipper Chair, circa 1860Automaton Vintage Furnishings
This possibly English Victorian slipper chair, is a perfect example of the design sensibilities of that era, circa 1860. The original design purpose of this style was as a nursing chair. The low seat allowed the stiff corseted wearing mother to interact with small children without bending over. These chairs were notably popular in English upper class homes.
The piece is comprised of an intricately carved rosewood frame, (a type of wood frequently used for this chair form) neutral cream upholstery, shaped back and the low seat, on rising cabriole legs. This antique chair adds charm and historical interest to any space it is introduced. It could be utilized as a lounge chair in a living room, library or den and also as an interesting side chair option for a bedroom, bathroom, office or walk in closet. This piece would work well in Traditional, French Farm House, Renaissance, Chinoiserie, English Country House and Eclectic interior design schemes.
