17th Century English Carved Oak and Elm Large Blanket Chest CofferAutomaton Vintage Furnishings
Add a real show stopper to your interior with this extremely large English Carolean chest or coffer, which can be used for blankets, bedding or other storage or display purposes. This striking piece is fabricated from hand-carved oak and elm and is probably thought to be Welsh from the mid-late 17th century.
The chest has a weighty top which opens to a cavernous interior storage (see photos for an image of Katie inside of the trunk with plenty of room to spare) and over to the right is a candle box with a lifting lid. The front panel includes two large, radiant pinwheel carvings within geometric designs which centre a large wrought iron escutcheon over a smaller radiant roundel. The sides are dovetailed and the base has bracket feet joined by a repeating geometric motif carved shaped skirt.
This impressive coffer would look great in a Classic or contemporary dining room, living room, den, family room, hallway, office or bedroom. It would also be an Apt choice in a corporate, retail or hospitality location such as a boutique hotel lobby, members club, workspace studio, executive office or in a luxe clothing emporium. Consider it for a short term or long term storage chest, blankets, bedding and pillows chest, or somewhere to stow away your kids when you have guests over (we are just kidding about this last one).
Measurements: 31.5" H x 70" W x 25.25" D
Very good antique condition. Sturdy and presents very well. Signs of wear commensurate with age and use are apparent. The lid has some areas of waxy residue. Some wood fill repairs and one apparent professional repair to the front panel. Some damage and losses to the dovetailing on the right. Signs of humidity cracks. Escutcheon has possibly been replaced and does not close completely flush.
